Some of badminton’s finest athletes will compete for the prestigious Player of the Year awards for the previous season! The Male Player of the Year category for 2012 includes renowned players such as two-time Olympic gold medallist Lin Dan of China and his long-standing rival Lee Chong Wei from Malaysia, who is currently ranked as the world No.1 and a two-time Olympic silver medallist. Other nominees in this category are Chen Long, Olympic bronze medallist and winner of the BWF World Superseries Finals, as well as the Men’s Doubles Olympic gold medallists Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng from China and Lee Yong Dae and the now retired Chung Jae Sung from Korea, who won the Men’s Doubles bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympics.

The Female Player of the Year category features the world No.1 Li Xuerui of China, who achieved a remarkable eight titles in 2012, including the Olympic and year-end crowns. Also nominated are Li’s compatriot Wang Yihan, the Olympic silver medallist, India’s Saina Nehwal, who won the Olympic bronze, and the winning Olympic Women’s Doubles pair Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei from China. If a pair wins either of these categories, they will share the annual award.

Moving on to the Most Promising Player of the Year, the nominees include Tai Tzu Ying from Chinese Taipei, Viktor Axelsen from Denmark, Kento Momota, the Junior World champion from Japan, Nozomi Okuhara, the Junior World champion from Japan, Ratchanok Intanon from Thailand, and Busanan Ongbumrungpan from Thailand.

The criteria for nomination are as follows:

  • Exceptional and consistent performance throughout the year
  • Performance at the Olympics, BWF events, and Superseries events
  • Being a positive role model for the sport beyond on-court performance
  • Ranking among the top five players in the world during the year of nomination

The winners for these awards will be chosen exclusively by the BWF Council. The announcement and presentation of prizes will take place at a gala dinner in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, May 18th, following the BWF annual general meeting.

The BWF would also like to recognize and congratulate the recipients of other awards for 2012, including:

  • Hall of Fame: Ha Tae Kwon (KOR); Gong Zhi Chao (CHN)
  • Distinguished Service Award: Joao Matos (POR)
  • Meritorious Service Award: Luis Manoel da Fonseca Barreto (BRA); John C Briggs (ENG); Abby Kumar (ENG); Mrs Linda Alvarez (GIB); Chau Man Tuan (HKG); Hsu Show Hoo (HKB); Iriansyah Busra (INA); Anton Gonadi (INA); Koesdarto Pramono (INA); Chua Soo Hock (MAS) and Barabash Mykola (UKR)
  • Women in Badminton: Hiromi Murai (JPN)
  • Certificate of Commendation: Siam Cement Group (SCG)
