Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have achieved a significant milestone in their badminton careers. Their outstanding performance in the YONEX French Open 2019 has propelled them to their career-best ninth place in the BWF world rankings. This dynamic Indian men’s doubles pair is the first to break into the top 10. While they briefly held the ninth spot after winning the Thailand Open in August, they slipped down due to fitness concerns that prevented them from participating in the TOTAL BWF World Championships.

In a remarkable turnaround, Rankireddy and Shetty stunned the competition in Paris. They defeated world champions Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan, Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, and Asian champions Hiroyuki Endo/Yuta Watanabe in the semifinals before narrowly losing to Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo in the final. The duo expressed their happiness with their achievements and their determination to maintain their top 10 ranking until the end of the year, with the ultimate goal of breaking into the top 5 next year.

It is worth noting that no other Indian men’s doubles pair has ever reached the top 10 since the computerized rankings were introduced. Rankireddy and Shetty have also made history by winning a World Tour Super 500 event, the Thailand Open, and consistently outperforming other top pairs.

In the women’s doubles category, Kim So Yeong/Kong Hee Yong, the runners-up in the French Open, have climbed to No.6 in the rankings, while Greysia Polii/Apriyani Rahayu from Indonesia have dropped to No.8. In mixed doubles, Chris Adcock/Gabrielle Adcock have risen two spots to No.11. Praveen Jordan/Melati Daeva Oktavianti from Indonesia, who won consecutive events in Denmark and France, have maintained their No.5 position.

Rankireddy and Shetty’s impressive journey has not only brought them personal success but has also raised the profile of Indian men’s doubles badminton on the global stage. We can expect more exciting performances from this talented duo in the future. Stay tuned for more updates on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) news.
