The Badminton World Federation (BWF) Upholds Suspension of Russian and Belarussian Athletes and Officials

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced that it will maintain the suspension of Russian and Belarussian athletes and officials from participating in any BWF sanctioned international tournaments. This decision was made during a recent BWF Council Meeting, with the aim of preserving the integrity of badminton competitions and ensuring the safety of all athletes.

Background: Ensuring Safety and Integrity in Badminton

The BWF’s decision to support the unified approach of the sports movement in not allowing athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in international competitions stems from concerns over participants’ safety. This position is still largely enforced by many federations, given the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia and Belarus. Recent precedence of governments interfering and blocking athletes’ participation in sporting events has further emphasized the need to prioritize safety and prevent the politicization of sports.

Promoting Peace and Solidarity through Sports

While sport should foster peace and solidarity between all people, it should not become a political vehicle for influencing geo-politics. The BWF firmly believes that athletes should always be allowed to participate in sports competitions without judgment based on their passport and separate from any external geo-political conflicts.

Reviewing the Situation and Upholding the Suspension

The BWF recognizes the recently proposed framework by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which allows athletes from Russia and Belarus to potentially resume participation if International Federations decide on such inclusion. However, given the potential risks to players and events, the complex criteria for allowing participation, and the possible repercussions, including conditions related to Olympic qualification and potential participation in Paris 2024, the BWF is not convinced that lifting the suspensions on Russian and Belarussian players and officials is justified at this time.

Supporting Ukraine and Condemning the Invasion

The BWF expresses unwavering support to the people of Ukraine and the Ukrainian badminton community. The organization strongly condemns the invasion of Ukraine as it goes against the core values of the BWF and its objective to promote peace.

Continued Monitoring and Dialogue

The BWF will closely monitor the situation and maintain open dialogue with its membership and international sport movement partners to review its position in due course. The aim is to strike a balance between upholding the integrity of badminton competitions, ensuring athlete safety, and promoting a peaceful and inclusive sporting environment.

Overall, the BWF remains committed to its role in preserving the integrity of badminton and providing a safe platform for athletes from around the world to compete. By prioritizing fairness, safety, and peace, the BWF aims to contribute positively to the global badminton community.
