Para badminton athletes and coaches from several countries in the West Asia region are gathering in Sharjah, UAE this weekend for a Para badminton Technical Workshop. This workshop, supported by the AGITOS Foundation, is a significant step towards the 7th IWAS World Games, which is set to start on Sunday.

The aim of the workshop is to provide valuable opportunities for players, coaches, classifiers, technical officials, tournament organizers, and administrators in Para badminton to foster the growth of the sport in the region. The activities planned for the week include a Player Development Camp, Coaches Workshop, National Classifier Workshop, and Classification of New Players.

Paul Kurzo, Vice President of Para Badminton at BWF, expressed his excitement on the development of Para badminton in the West Asia region. He thanked the Agitos Foundation, UAE Badminton and Table Tennis Federation, the IWAS World Games Organizing Committee, and the team of BWF experts for their dedicated efforts to organize this workshop.

Kurzo hopes that these activities will not only further develop the sport in the region but also attract more countries and players to participate in Para badminton events in the coming years. With Para badminton set to make its debut at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, BWF is fully committed to the global development of this sport, including the identification and nurturing of talented athletes towards Paralympic Games qualification.

Xavier Gonzalez, Deputy Chairperson of the Agitos Foundation Executive Committee, emphasized the importance of training camps like this in preparing athletes, coaches, and classifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. He stated that the Agitos Foundation is proud to support this sport technical course and contribute to the development of Para badminton in West Asia.

Shaun Lee, Asian Paralympic Committee Sports Manager, praised the workshops for providing equal opportunities for all countries to be involved in badminton. Lee highlighted that projects like this, supported by BWF and the AGITOS Foundation, help in building technical knowledge and expertise, particularly in countries that may lack the necessary resources for development.

The 7th IWAS World Games will take place from February 10th to 17th, featuring Para badminton as one of the seven sports. This event marks the second time it is being held in Sharjah, following the successful hosting in 2011.
