Nearly 50 women from across the Middle East are participating in the inaugural Peace and Sport Cup – Women in Badminton – Dubai 2014, which began at the Etisalat Academy on Saturday. This event, organized by the Dubai Sports Council (DSC) in association with the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and Peace and Sport, aims to bring together female badminton players, coaches, and technical officials from Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and the United Arab Emirates.

The formal opening of the event at the Etisalat Academy was attended by President and Founder of Peace and Sport, Dr. Joel Bouzou; IOC Member and BWF Vice-President (Africa), Dagmawit Girmay Berhane; and BWF Secretary General, Thomas Lund. The DSC Secretary General, Dr. Ahmad Saad Al Sharif, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating that it will contribute to consolidating Dubai’s position on the world map.

Dr. Bouzou, who has been associated with Dubai following the successive staging of the Peace and Sport Forum here last year, emphasized the city’s role in fostering peace through sport. He expressed his hope that the event would lead to the establishment of new friendships among the women badminton players from the Arab world.

As a former badminton doubles specialist from Denmark, Lund was keen to witness the promotion of his sport in the region. He believes that the tournament will be a great inspiration for the entire region, offering an opportunity to build friendships and promote peace through badminton.

The badminton tournament started with the preliminary rounds, featuring doubles pairs from different nationalities. The players have been divided into two groups, and the top two pairs from each group will advance to the knockout stages. The final will be played later today.
