Dutch international Koen Ridder appointed as Chair of the BWF Athletes’ Commission

Koen Ridder is taking over as the Chair of the BWF Athletes’ Commission, succeeding Yuhan Tan of Belgium, whose term ended in May. Alongside Ridder, Marc Zwiebler from Germany has been appointed as the Vice-Chair. This decision was made by fellow commission members after the Athletes’ Commission election which took place during the TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup in Gold Coast last month. Ridder will represent the athletes on the BWF Council for the next two years.

Recognition of player representation

BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer warmly welcomed Ridder to the BWF Council, emphasizing the significance of having strong representation for players. Høyer stated, “Our players are a crucial stakeholder in our international federation, and it is imperative that they have a powerful voice at the BWF’s highest level. We anticipate Koen’s valuable contribution in this regard,” while also expressing gratitude to Yuhan Tan for his service on behalf of athletes.

Leveraging past experiences

Having previously served as the Vice-Chair for the past two years, Ridder intends to draw upon his prior experience as he takes on the role of Chair. “I had the opportunity to work closely with Yuhan Tan during my tenure as Vice-Chair, and he did an excellent job. I will utilize the knowledge I gained during that time,” shared the 32-year-old.

The commission aims to enhance the well-being of athletes, provide after-career solutions, and foster improved communication with non-English-speaking athletes. Ridder expressed his aspiration to elevate the Athletes’ Commission to new heights by intensifying communication and discussions with the BWF, leveraging information and developments received from the IOC Athletes’ Commission.

Farewell and future prospects

Outgoing Chair, Yuhan Tan, extended his best wishes to the BWF Athletes’ Commission, saying, “I want to express my gratitude to everyone for their cooperation over the past years. It has truly been an honor to represent the athletes, and I wish the Athletes’ Commission all the best moving forward.”
