Japan and Korea demonstrated resilience as they both secured 4-1 victories in the evening session of the first day of the TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup 2017 in Gold Coast.

Korea and Japan Overcome Challenges

Despite an initial setback in the Men’s Doubles match against Russia in sub-group 1B, Korea regrouped and emerged victorious. Meanwhile, Japan encountered difficulties in the Men’s Singles after initially leading 2-0 against Germany. However, Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi, the Rio 2016 gold medallists, confidently secured Japan’s win in the Women’s Doubles match.

Stellar Performances from Japan

Takeshi Kamura and Keigo Sonoda triumphed in the Men’s Doubles, while Nozomi Okuhara showcased her dominance in the Women’s Singles. Notably, Okuhara’s male counterparts displayed resilience, securing victory despite a late challenge from Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Seidel of Germany. Park Joo Bong, Japan’s Head Coach, expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, acknowledging that Men’s Singles had been a weak point for them.

Korea’s Convincing Victory

Korea’s Women’s Doubles duo, Jung Kyung Eun and Kim Ha Na, reunited successfully and played a crucial role in securing victory against Russia. They delivered a resounding win in their match against Ekaterina Bolotova and Alina Davletova. Korea also emerged victorious in the Women’s Singles, Men’s Singles, and Mixed Doubles, achieving an overall convincing result.

Sri Lanka and Slovakia Shine

In other matches, Sri Lanka effortlessly defeated Fiji in their sub-group 3B tie, winning by a comfortable margin of 5-0. Dinuka Karunaratna and Niluka Karunaratne played significant roles in Sri Lanka’s success, excelling in the Men’s Doubles and Men’s Singles matches, respectively. Slovakia also emerged victorious in their sub-group 3B clash against Tahiti, winning all five matches.
