Uber Cup: Korea Sweats but Secures Victory against Canada

Group D favorites Korea faced a tough challenge from a spirited Canada team in the Uber Cup, but ultimately secured a 4-1 victory to advance to the quarterfinals. Although the Koreans had a comfortable margin, they dropped at least one game in three out of their four following matches after An Se Young’s impressive performance against Michelle Li.

In a thrilling showdown, Canada’s first women’s pair, Rachel Honderich and Kristen Tsai, seemed poised for victory after winning the first game 21-17 and leading the second 20-18. However, Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Yong made a remarkable comeback, scoring four consecutive points and ultimately winning the rubber game 21-14.

Honderich and Tsai were two points from winning.

The excitement continued as 19-year-old Wen Yu Zhang, ranked 77th in the world, stunned the 19th-ranked Kim Ga Eun in the second women’s singles match. Zhang’s victory marked Canada’s first point on the board and carried a special significance for her.

“We don’t train together and are players from different provinces coming together to form a group, so being able to win a match at this stage is big,” Zhang said. “We don’t expect a lot, just giving our best every match.”

Despite Catherine Choi and Crystal Lai’s defeat to Jeong Na Eun and Kim Hye Jeong, Talia Ng, Canada’s third singles player, fought hard against her higher-ranked opponent, Sim Yu Jin, taking the match to three games before conceding defeat.

Ng pushed Sim to three games.

Ng, ranked 81st in the world and one year older than Zhang, sees her performance against the 46th-ranked Sim as a positive sign for her future development. She gained confidence and motivation from her strong showing against an experienced Asian player.

“When I was leading, I thought, ‘Wow, I got this, I can actually do this,'” Ng said. “Asian players are a lot steadier, and it’s hard to break their defense. So this gives me more confidence and motivation to train harder to reach their level eventually.”
