Malaysia’s Badminton Success at the VICTOR China Open 2019

It was an incredible day for Malaysia’s men’s and mixed doubles teams at the VICTOR China Open 2019. Both teams, playing simultaneously against Danish opponents, emerged victorious after intense matches that went down to the wire.

Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi, in a nail-biting encounter, saved match points at 20-21 to defeat reigning China Open champions Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, winning 21-18, 14-21, 25-23. Minutes later, Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong triumphed over familiar rivals Mathias Boe and Mads Conrad-Petersen with a 21-13, 22-24, 27-25 victory.

The veterans, Goh and Tan, expressed their happiness at the win, acknowledging the support from the enthusiastic crowd. They admitted that the match was a tough one, but they managed to come out on top by staying focused and not giving up. Unfortunately, Teo suffered a left leg injury during the match and will undergo a doctor’s inspection for further assessment.

In the mixed doubles category, Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie also put up a strong fight and emerged victorious. They defeated the No.8 seeds Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith with a hard-fought 18-21, 21-17, 22-20 win. Goh highlighted the tough competition between the two pairs and credited their previous win against Ellis and Smith at the All England for boosting their confidence. They are now preparing to face the in-form Thai pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai in their next match.

Sindhu of India with a score of 12-21, 21-13, 21-19. This win marks Chochuwong’s first quarterfinal appearance at a Super 1000 level tournament. She showcased her peak performance, following her impressive performances at the Thailand Open and her opening round victory against Michelle Li of Canada. Chochuwong expressed her happiness and satisfaction for reaching the quarterfinals, describing it as a great day for her. She mentioned the unique challenges of the court and how playing on the same court the previous night helped her adapt her game.

In other matches, Carolina Marin continued her impressive comeback by defeating USA’s Beiwen Zhang with a convincing 21-17, 21-12 win. She will now face local hope, No.7 seed He Bing Jiao, for a spot in the semifinals. Sai Praneeth B., the surprise World Championships semifinalist, also kept the momentum going with a straight-games victory over Lu Guang Zu of China, winning 21-19, 21-19.
