BWF News: New Venue for Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games Opens to the Public

The Musashino Forest Sport Plaza, a new venue specifically built for the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, has officially opened its doors to the public. As we countdown to the Olympic Games with 972 days left, and 1,004 days until the Paralympic Games, the completion of this venue serves as a testament to Tokyo’s progress in preparing for these prestigious events.

Constructed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza will host badminton and fencing events during the Olympic Games, as well as wheelchair basketball during the Paralympic Games. With a seating capacity of over 10,000, the main arena also features a swimming pool, gym, multi-use sports area, and two fitness studios, all available for public use. The facility incorporates state-of-the-art technology, including solar panels on the roof, to minimize its carbon footprint.

Accessibility was a crucial consideration in the design of the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza, adhering to the Tokyo 2020 Accessibility Guidelines. The venue ensures that people of all abilities, from the elderly and those with impairments to parents with strollers and individuals with guide dogs, can easily access and enjoy the sporting events. Wheelchair spaces are available in the main arena, and the seating arrangement guarantees an unobstructed view for wheelchair users, even if spectators in front of them stand up.
