BWF News: Launch of AirBadminton Community Project

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) and HSBC have teamed up to introduce the AirBadminton Community Project, a groundbreaking initiative that aims to make badminton more accessible to the public. This exciting development was officially unveiled at the Tianhe Gymnasium in Guangzhou, China, to great acclaim.

Bringing Badminton to the Community

Following the successful introduction of AirBadminton in Guangzhou earlier this year, the BWF, in collaboration with HSBC as its Global Development Partner, is now installing permanent AirBadminton courts in various locations. These courts, constructed on different surfaces, will be open to the public as part of a comprehensive community outreach program.

At a special exhibition held alongside the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals, BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer, HSBC Bank (China) Company Limited CEO David Liao, and representatives from the Chinese Badminton Association (CBA) and Guangzhou Sports Bureau (GSB) were present to mark the occasion.

Boosting Accessibility and Participation

The primary objective of the AirBadminton Community Project is to increase accessibility to the sport by creating public courts that cater to the needs of local communities. President Høyer expressed his excitement about the project, emphasizing its potential to revolutionize the sport and promote the development of AirBadminton globally.

With plans to open additional courts in four more locations in Guangzhou City by the end of the year, negotiations are underway to extend the initiative to neighboring Shenzhen. The ultimate goal is to establish permanent AirBadminton courts worldwide, ensuring that everyone can enjoy this popular sport.

A Five-Year Journey

The AirBadminton project has been under development for the past five years, starting with the creation of the AirShuttle, a new type of outdoor shuttlecock designed to withstand outdoor conditions. The AirShuttle offers improved durability, stability, and wind resistance, enabling a more enjoyable badminton experience outside.

Beyond enhancing the sporting experience, AirBadminton also aims to promote the health and social benefits associated with the sport. Speaking at the launch, David Liao expressed his enthusiasm for the project and the positive impact it will have on the local community.

The Unveiling Ceremony

To inaugurate the new permanent outdoor courts, junior players from the Guangzhou Badminton Academy were invited to participate in a ceremonial match. Additionally, fans attending the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals had the opportunity to try out AirBadminton at the fan activation zone, further igniting their interest in the sport.

Liao added that the introduction of these public courts will expand access to badminton and foster a platform for individuals to lead healthier, more inclusive lives through sports. Interested communities can find more information on how to utilize these courts by visiting www.airbadminton.sport.

The highly-anticipated AirShuttles are expected to hit the market in the first quarter of 2020. With the AirBadminton Community Project taking flight, the future of the sport looks brighter than ever. So, get ready to experience the thrill of AirBadminton and become part of this global movement!
