BWF News

Last week, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) conducted a training course to empower Syrian refugees as badminton teachers through the BWF Shuttle Time program.

The BWF is committed to promoting humanitarian, peace, and development activities in the Middle East. They have partnered with the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation and World Taekwondo to offer engaging activities for the children and youth at the Azraq Refugee Camp in Jordan.

In January, the BWF and World Taekwondo signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on humanitarian and social development initiatives worldwide through sports.

At the Azraq Refugee Camp, two badminton experts from Badminton Africa and the Jordan Badminton Federation trained a group of six male and seven female Syrian refugees as badminton teachers.

These trained teachers will now host weekly badminton sessions for the boys and girls at the camp, using their newly acquired skills.

BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Badminton is a sport for all, and we are excited to partner with World Taekwondo to provide opportunities for sports and physical activities to the children and youth at the Azraq Refugee Camp. Our BWF Shuttle Time program is a perfect platform to introduce additional sports and fun activities, and we can’t wait to see the impact of these trained teachers.”

The BWF plans to organize a badminton festival in early 2020, followed by continuous badminton coaching throughout the year at the Azraq Refugee Camp.

This collaboration between the BWF and the UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency) is not their first. In April 2017, they launched the BWF-UN Badminton For All Project, and in 2016, they partnered with the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP). These partnerships demonstrate the BWF’s commitment to making a positive difference through badminton.

President Høyer highlighted the significance of this collaboration, stating, “If badminton can contribute to a better life for others, then we are doing our job.”
