BWF News

Top seed Jan O Jorgensen faced a tough challenge in the Men’s Singles second round at the Yonex-Sunrise India Open. In a thrilling match against home favorite HS Prannoy, Jorgensen lost his way after a strong start, eventually falling 18-21 21-14 21-14. Prannoy’s relentless attack and powerful jump smashes proved to be too much for the Danish player.

Despite Jorgensen’s defeat, it was a successful day for the Indian players in Men’s Singles. China Open champion Kidambi Srikanth avenged his All England loss to Japan’s Kento Momota, while RMV Gurusaidutt fought past compatriot Sameer Verma. However, the standout performer was undoubtedly Prannoy, who showcased his potential with an impressive victory over the world No.2.

Reflecting on the match, Jorgensen admitted that Prannoy’s aggressive style was a challenge for him. He mentioned that the strong drift and the inability to control the match affected his performance. Prannoy, on the other hand, acknowledged the significance of beating a top-ranked player like Jorgensen, stating that it gives him confidence in this Olympic qualifying year.

Moving forward, Prannoy will face Jorgensen’s compatriot Viktor Axelsen in the quarter-finals. Axelsen comfortably defeated Lin Yu Hsien from Chinese Taipei to secure his place in the next round. The remaining quarter-final match-ups include Lin Dan (China) versus Tommy Sugiarto (Indonesia), Gurusaidutt against Xue Song (China), and Takuma Ueda (Japan) against Srikanth.
