Nelson Javier, a former medalist at Toronto 2015 and participant in Lima 2019, has embarked on a new journey as a coach. His goal is to continue contributing to the growth of badminton in the Dominican Republic. Transitioning from player to coach has presented its challenges, but Nelson is determined to make a positive impact.

Embracing the Coaching Role

“I made the decision to become a coach almost four years ago. While I was still competing, I started thinking about what would come next. I realized that I could contribute more to my teammates, but I needed to learn how to do it. That’s when I decided to pursue coaching,” explains Nelson.

Becoming a coach requires a different skill set than being an athlete. It involves teaching and sharing knowledge, knowing when and how to provide guidance. Nelson acknowledges that the transition hasn’t been easy, but he sees it as a necessary step in his personal and professional growth.

Sharing Knowledge and Empowering Others

As a coach, Nelson has had the opportunity to share his expertise with other coaches and train alongside some of the best athletes in the Dominican Republic. He has participated in various international tournaments, which has further enriched his coaching experience.

Nelson’s objectives are ambitious. He aspires to lead a successful team and help other coaches navigate challenging situations. His focus extends beyond the sport itself; he aims to develop individuals who excel both on and off the court.

The Power of Continuous Learning

Continuous training is the key to being a successful coach. Nelson recognizes the importance of constantly improving oneself in order to make a greater impact on his athletes. Recently, he had the privilege of participating in a pilot course for level 3 coaches. This experience has challenged him to view training from a different perspective.

“In this course, we have explored new theories and models that we can apply with our players and fellow coaches. Our training used to focus solely on preparing players for matches, but now we understand that there are many other aspects a coach can influence to foster the holistic development of an athlete,” says Nelson.

Moving Forward with Dreams and Ambitions

Dreams serve as a driving force, guiding us towards our goals. As a player, Nelson achieved some of his dreams, and now, as a coach, he has set new aspirations. While he dreams of coaching an Olympic medalist, his ultimate goal is to witness badminton thrive in his country.

“My dream is for badminton to reach its full potential in the Dominican Republic. It’s an ambitious dream, but even if we can make significant progress, I would consider it a success,” expresses Nelson.
