Carlos M. Maldonado González: A Story of Passion and Dedication

Carlos M. Maldonado González, the Shuttle Time National Coordinator for the Puerto Rico Badminton Federation, is a true inspiration. Despite growing up in a poor neighborhood in the Municipality of Vega Alta, Carlos’s parents always prioritized his education and development. They instilled in him the value of hard work and determination.

Early on, Carlos discovered his love for badminton. Introduced to the sport through a PE book, he was captivated by its beauty and decided to offer something different to his students as a teacher. This marked the beginning of his journey in badminton.

Although there was a badminton federation in Puerto Rico since 1994, it wasn’t until Pedro Blach arrived on the island that the sport saw significant growth. Carlos joined the federation as a coach and later became the Secretary General. One of his most memorable moments was leading the technical direction of the 2009 Junior Pan Am, where he worked closely with David Carton, the event’s referee.

Carlos’s dedication to developing badminton extends beyond the federation. He began promoting non-traditional sports, including badminton, in schools in 1996. Despite facing challenges in a community with limited resources, he successfully nurtured talent for the youth national team. In 2011, Puerto Rico was chosen as the first country in Latin America to implement the Shuttle Time project. Although the program faced setbacks due to socio-political changes, Carlos continues to work with the Ministry of Education to revive and expand it.
