Badminton Pan America

Athletes from Brazil, Canada, Guatemala, and Peru made history by winning the first Para badminton gold medals in the Parapan Am Games held in Lima 2019. The Parapan Am Games 2019 also saw Para badminton players from Cuba, United States, and Venezuela claiming medals in their respective categories.

Full results can be checked here, but some notable achievements include Brazil winning 4 gold, 4 silver, and 2 bronze medals, Peru winning 2 gold and 1 bronze medal, Canada winning 1 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze medals, Guatemala winning 1 gold medal, Cuba winning 1 silver and 2 bronze medals, United States winning 1 silver medal, and Venezuela winning 1 bronze medal.

Mikaela Almeida from Brazil secured the first Para badminton gold medal in the Women’s Singles SU5 category, with Olivia Meier from Canada and Laura Lanes from Cuba taking the silver and bronze medals, respectively. Raul Anguiano from Guatemala emerged as a star by defeating Rogerio De Oliveira from Brazil in the Men’s Singles category, winning the gold medal. Pascal Lapointe from Canada clinched the bronze medal.

Brazil’s Marcelo Alves and Julio Cesar Godoy secured the second gold medal by defeating their compatriots Rômulo Soares and Rodolfo Cano in the Men’s Doubles WH1 – WH2 category. Richard Peter and Bernard Lapointe took the third place. Eduardo Oliveira from Brazil secured another gold medal by defeating Ricardo Cavalli, also from Brazil, in a thrilling 3-games match.

Kleiber Mijares from Venezuela claimed the bronze medal in the Men’s Singles SU5 category by defeating Jean Paul Ortiz from Colombia. Pedro Pablo De Vinatea from Peru won the first gold for his country by emerging victorious in the Men’s Singles SL3 category, defeating Leonardo Zuffo in the final. Rolando Bello from Cuba secured the third place by defeating William Roussy from Canada.

In the Mixed Doubles SL3-SU5 category, Pascal Lapointe and Olivia Meier from Canada won the gold medal by winning all their matches. Rolando Bello and Laura Lanes from Cuba claimed the silver medal, and Ricardo Cavalli and Abinaecia Da Silva secured the bronze.

Vitor Tavares from Brazil added another gold medal to his country’s tally by winning the SS6 final, competing against Miles Krajewski from the United States. Jesus Salva from Peru claimed the third-place position. Pilar Jauregui emerged as the champion in the Women’s Singles WH2 category, winning the gold medal for the host country by defeating Yuka Chokyu from Canada.

Daniele Souza also made her mark by winning a medal in the Women’s Singles category, securing the bronze medal. With their outstanding performances, these athletes have etched their names in history as the very first Para badminton medalists in the Parapan Am Games.
