Ko Sung Hyun and Kim Ha Na Secure Quarter-Final Victory at The Star Australian Open 2014

Ko Sung Hyun and Kim Ha Na, the Korean mixed doubles pair, achieved a significant win in their quest for The Star Australian Open 2014. They emerged as surprising winners over second seeds Xu Chen/Ma Jin of China in their quarter-final match. Despite the absence of top seeds Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir, Xu and Ma were expected to pose a strong challenge for the title. However, the Korean duo convincingly defeated them with a score of 21-15 21-15.

Ko/Kim’s next opponents are Indonesian brother-sister duo Markis Kido/Pia Zebadiah Bernadeth. Kido/Bernadeth overcame a tough challenge from Singapore’s Danny Bawa Chrisnanta/Vanessa Neo in a thrilling match that ended with a score of 16-21 21-11 21-17.

On the other side of the bracket, Germany’s Michael Fuchs and Birgit Michels continued to impress with a dominant performance against Korea’s Lee Yong Dae/Shin Seung Chan. Fuchs/Michels defeated their opponents with a score of 21-18 21-9. In the semi-finals, they are set to face Thai veterans Sudket Prapakamol/Saralee Thoungthongkam.

In the Men’s Singles category, defending champion Tian Houwei faced a tough challenge in his quarter-final match against fellow Chinese player Wang Zhengming. Wang displayed great determination, refusing to give in despite facing four game points. However, Tian managed to secure the first game with a score of 25-23 and proceeded to win the second game with relative ease.

Tian’s senior compatriot, the legendary Lin Dan, also secured a place in the semi-finals with a swift victory over Korea’s Son Wan Ho. The score in their match was 21-17 21-10. The other semi-final will be an all-Indonesian affair, with third seed Tommy Sugiarto taking on veteran Simon Santoso. Sugiarto had a relatively easy quarter-final match against emerging Japanese prospect Kento Momota, with a score of 21-18 21-7. Santoso was similarly untroubled by Hong Kong’s Wong Wing Ki, winning with a score of 21-17 21-15.

In Women’s Singles, top seed Wang Shixian showcased her skill by closing out her match against Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying in straight games. Tai posed a tough challenge throughout the second game, but Wang ultimately prevailed with a score of 21-15 21-19. Wang is now set to face India’s Saina Nehwal in the semi-finals. Nehwal powered past Japanese veteran Eriko Hirose with a score of 21-18 21-9.

Spain’s Carolina Marin reached her first MetLife BWF World Superseries semi-final of 2014 with a hard-fought victory over India’s Sindhu PV, winning with a score of 21-17 21-17. Marin’s next opponent is Japan’s Yui Hashimoto, who outplayed China’s Han Li with a score of 21-18 21-18.

  • Olympic Women’s Doubles champions Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei survived a close match against Korea’s Shin Seung Chan/Lee So Hee, winning with a score of 8-21 21-17 21-19. They will face top seeds Christinna Pedersen/Kamilla Rytter Juhl of Denmark in the semi-finals.

  • China’s Luo Ying/Luo Yu, who defeated Japan’s Mami Naito/Shizuka Matsuo, will face Japan’s Ayaka Takahashi/Misaki Matsutomo in the other Women’s Doubles semi-final.

  • Korea’s Lee Yong Dae and Yoo Yeon Seong kept their hopes alive for a hat-trick of World Superseries victories with a 21-15 24-22 win over Malaysia’s Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong. They will face another Malaysian pair, Hoon Thien How/Tan Boon Heong, in the semi-finals.

  • Chinese Taipei’s Lee Sheng Mu/Tsai Chia Hsin overcame China’s Liu Xiaolong/Qiu Zihan to earn a semi-final spot against second seeds Kim Ki Jung/Kim Sa Rang of Korea.
