On the opening day of the BCA Indonesia Open 2014, there were some nail-biting moments for the home heroes Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir. Despite being the current World champions, they were still searching for their first win on home turf as a pair. They faced a tough challenge from the in-form Germans Michael Fuchs and Birgit Michels. It was a rollercoaster of a match, with the Indonesians losing the second game and the Germans closing in on them in the decider. However, Ahmad and Natsir managed to escape further damage and clinch the victory.

Another English duo, Chris and Gabrielle Adcock, also had a close call in their match against Japan’s Kenichi Hayakawa and Misaki Matsutomo. After taking a comfortable lead in the third game, they allowed their opponents to catch up. But the Adcocks stayed focused and eventually came out on top.

There were other notable matches on the first day of the tournament. Chris Langridge and Heather Olver from England had a relatively easy win against Indonesians Muhammad Rijal and Vita Marissa. Third seeds Xu Chen and Ma Jin dominated their match against Korea’s Kim Ki Jung and Kim So Young. However, the 2012 champions Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thoungthongkam from Thailand were eliminated by the Netherlands’ Jacco Arends and Selena Piek in a close contest.

In the Mixed Doubles category, Korea’s Lee Yong Dae and Shin Seung Chan had a flawless performance against Indonesia’s Riky Widianto and Puspita Riichi Dili. Meanwhile, Scotland’s Robert Blair and Imogen Bankier almost pulled off an upset against local pair Praveen Jordan and Debby Susanto. Although they were two match points down, they managed to turn the game around. However, Jordan and Susanto escaped their grasp and secured a hard-fought victory.

The first round of the Women’s Singles category promises an exciting clash between World champion Ratchanok Intanon from Thailand and World Junior champion Akane Yamaguchi. Yamaguchi, who is in line to match Intanon’s record of three straight world junior titles, had a smooth qualification process. The other qualifiers in this category were Adrianti Firdasari and Rusydina Antardayu Riodingin from Indonesia, and Yang Li Lian from Malaysia.

In the Men’s Singles category, both Indonesian qualifiers Alamsyah Yunus and Wisnu Yuli Prasetyo faced tough challenges in the qualifying rounds. They were joined in the main draw by China’s Chen Yuekun and Malaysia’s Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif.

The Men’s Doubles qualifying field saw three pairings from different nations. Unfortunately, only one of them, Alvent Yulianto Chandra from Indonesia and Shintaro Ikeda from Japan, was able to qualify.
