The draws for the 2022 YONEX All England Open men’s singles tournament were revealed on Tuesday, setting the stage for an exciting competition. Reigning Olympic gold medalist Viktor Axelsen, the top seed, faces a tough challenge in his quest for a second title. His first-round opponent is Bhamidipati Sai Praneeth, a bronze medalist at the 2019 BWF World Championships.

In the other half of the draw, second seed Kento Momota, a former singles champion at the Utilita Arena Birmingham, will take on Axelsen’s Danish counterpart and Thomas Cup teammate Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus. If Momota and Axelsen both advance, they could potentially meet in the semi-finals. Another Danish player, Anders Antonsen, also poses a threat to Momota’s journey to the final as they might face each other in that stage. Antonsen’s road to the final begins with a challenging match against Loh Kean Yew, the gold medalist at the 2021 BWF World Championships.

In the women’s singles, Tai Tzu Ying, the world number one and a three-time Yonex All England Open champion, faces Lianne Tan in the first round. Tan, a former European Games silver medalist from Belgium, is expected to provide a formidable test for Tai. Akane Yamaguchi, the second seed, will face Phittayaporn Chaiwan of Thailand. In the same half of the draw, Chen Fu Yei (3) will take on Zhang Yi Man in an all-Chinese match-up.

The draw also sets up a potential quarter-final clash between Chen and Jia and defending champions Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara from Japan. The bottom half of the draw features second seeds Lee Sohee and Shin Seungchan, who will take on Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva of Bulgaria in a challenging opener.

In the men’s doubles, the top-seeded Indonesian duo Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Marcus Fernaldi Gideon have an intriguing first-round match against Choi Solgyu and Seo Seungjae from Korea. Meanwhile, third seeds Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi from Japan, aiming to continue their country’s success in this event, face tough opponents in Man Wei Chong and Kai Wun Tee from Malaysia.
