The Badminton World Federation (BWF) and the International Testing Agency (ITA) have formed a partnership that will see the management of all Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUE) in badminton delegated to ITA’s specialized unit. With this collaboration, ITA will now have full responsibility for the TUE application process for all international-level athletes under BWF’s jurisdiction.

What are Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs)?

TUEs are an essential component of an effective anti-doping program. Athletes who suffer from acute or chronic diseases or require specific therapy for their injuries may need to use a substance that is on the Prohibited List. In such cases, they must apply for a TUE to seek permission to use the prohibited substance for their medical condition and to have a valid justification if they test positive for it during a doping control.

The approval process for TUEs involves a thorough examination by an expert body to determine the necessity of the exemption and prevent abuse. ITA’s specialized TUE department, along with its TUE Expert Group, will independently handle badminton’s TUE applications, reviews, and approvals in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code and the International Standard for Therapeutic Use Exemptions.

BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer expressed his optimism about the partnership, stating, “This is a positive step forward for us in our endeavor to maintain the integrity of badminton. Having the leadership and expertise of the ITA to manage all TUE-related processes will enhance the robust testing measures we already have in place to safeguard our sport.”

He stated, “The delegation of TUE management to ITA provides assurance that BWF’s process will be handled professionally, and badminton athletes will receive the thorough evaluation they deserve. We look forward to fostering a wider partnership in the future.”

The initial term of the partnership will extend until the end of 2021.
