Badminton Pan America

The recent Brazil Para-Badminton International 2018 held at the Brazilian Paralympic Center in Sao Paulo, Brazil, was a resounding success for Para-Badminton players in the Pan American region. Over 130 athletes from countries such as Canada, Chile, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Scotland, Spain, USA, Venezuela, and host country Brazil participated in the event.

Despite facing tough competition from a large Japanese delegation and other players with high rankings in the World Ranking, the Pan American athletes claimed an impressive number of medals, showcasing their exceptional skills.

The locals took home the most medals, with Vitor Gonçalves Tavares of Brazil leading the way, winning three gold medals. Vitor triumphed in Singles SS6 by defeating Yohei Hatakeyama of Japan with scores of 21-9 and 21-13. He also secured gold in the Doubles category, partnering with Miles Krajewski from the USA, and in Mixed Doubles with Rubi Fernandez from Peru.

Adding to Brazil’s success, Abinaecia Da Silva clinched a gold medal in WD SL3-SU5, partnering with Mamiko Toyoda from Japan. Marcelo Alves won a bronze medal in MS WH1 and a silver medal in MD WH1-WH2.

Peru displayed a strong performance, earning a total of 10 medals. Giuliana Poveda claimed a gold medal in Singles SS6 and a silver medal in Mixed Doubles with Jesus Salva. Pilar Jauregui won a silver medal in WS WH2, falling to Rie Ogura (ranked 8th in the world), and a bronze medal in XD WH1-WH2, partnering with Rodolfo Cano from Brazil. Pedro Pablo de Vinatea added to Peru’s tally with a bronze medal in both MS SL3 and MD SL3-SL4, partnering with Pascal Lapointe from Canada. Jenny Ventoncilla secured the gold medal in WS SL4 and a bronze in Doubles.

Chilean athletes also made their mark with five bronze medals. Jaime Aranguiz won in MS WH2, Fabiola Prado in WS, and XD SS6 with Pablo Coloma, and Araceli Pizarro in WS SL3 and WD SL3-SU5 with Jessica Dos Santos Vieira from Brazil.

Athletes from the United States, Canada, and Colombia also contributed to the medal count for their respective countries.
